Another psych rock masterclass from Grinding Eyes, ‘When The Night Falls’ is about all the ways the world changes in the dead of the night. The single creeps to life with an ethereal yet ominous guitar riff that swirls into the bass melody like the haze at dusk. As the last glimmer of light disappears, the feeling of dread rises as we wander into the darkness with Grinding Eyes.

Frontman Matt Wicks says: “The song is about how the fall of night makes you feel. Whether you are partying into the wee hours and suddenly stop and see the craziness around you or work only in the dark hours as a shift worker or nurse, the world changes in the night hours. Maybe everything feels easier as you become less visible as daylight fades into neon lights?

Hailing from Sydney, Grinding Eyes came together after late night impromptu jams and shares members with past and present bands such as The Mess Hall, Treatment, The Laurels, The Holy Soul and Kimono Drag Queens. Over the years they’ve racked up the kilometres, touring all over the world with legendary bands Jesus and Mary Chain, Swervedriver, Dinosaur Jr, Mudhoney, DMA’s, The Drones, King Gizzard and stacks more.

‘When The Night Falls’ is the latest single from their new record, Taste The Monochrome. Released in May this year, Taste The Monochrome is a journey through themes of love, loss, isolation, despair and time travel, set to an ominous soundtrack of psych-rock and shoegaze bound together with luscious atmospherics. Happy Mag called it “a devilish, mind-melting experience” while Hysteria Mag said the album was an “immersive universe unto itself”.

Grinding Eyes will take ‘When The Night Falls’ on tour. Kicking off tonight in Victoria then snaking its way up the East Coast, the band have some very stacked launch shows planned with Can You Handle The Acid Test #4 at the Tote in Melbourne on December 11 and Bad Vibrations at Waywards in Sydney on December 18 – both featuring huge lineups with mind bending lights and sonic visuals by Electric Light Brigade. Grinding Eyes are also set to appear at King Street Carnival in January.
