After exploring the depths of psychedelic funk, psych rock and 60s surf, The Bamboos have now produced their sixth studio album. There are all the handclaps, cowbells, bell jingles and spine tingles that you’d expect from the band; yet, they’ve managed to throw new flavours into the mix. Bandleader and multi-instrumentalist Lance Ferguson yet again enlists John Castle as co-producer (the two having already worked together on previous album Medicine Man), which proves a worthy collaboration.
Opposed to their previous album, Medicine Man, which featured a range of guest artists including Tim Rogers, Washington and Ella Black, the singing is equally shared by Kylie Auldist and Ella Thompson. This does not deter from the creativity of the band as they manage to thoroughly exhibit pure talent, pumping out irresistibly catchy numbers.
‘Avenger’ kick starts the show with hauntingly catchy keys, brilliant vocals and a tight rhythm section which lures the listener into the rest of the album. ‘Rats’ is another testament to their funk side as you are carried away on a barrage of funky horn blats. The album flows seamlessly and is just what you’d expect from the Melbournites, and a little bit more.
