[CD Review] THE DELTA RIGGS – Dipz Zebazios

Delta Riggs-2

Before being lucky enough to see The Delta Riggs at this years CMJ Music Marathon in New York City, I was only familiar with a couple of their more popular tracks. From Dipz Zebazios, the band’s second and newest album, I could happily hum along to the catchy grunge, pop tune of ‘Supersonic Casualties’, the first release, and a very catchy song.

With a British twang in a lot of Elliot Hammond’s lyrical delivery, the band attributes their new sound to the influence of Kasabian, Primal Scream and Divine Fits – all of whom the band have toured with in the past couple of years. More striking, the band also pays homage to the likes of OutKast and The Roots with a more modern sound, but reliant on analogue techniques and instruments.

With a distinctly more punk vibe, add a sprinkling of jazz beats and the iconic and very stripped back stylings of the band, Dipz Zebazios is very easy listening.

As for stand out tracks, the entire album is quite diverse. Every time I hear ‘Telescope House’, the 60’s rock’n’roll shaker vibe kind of makes me want to ‘do the twist’. The most surprising track is ‘No Friends’ – markedly different to the indie fusion vibe of the other tracks, this heavy injection of hip hop gives the album a burst of energy and reminded me slightly of The Kooks recent album, Listen.
