Give Fattura Della Morte a few cartons of piss and mic them up at Rock The Nation studios over in Mayfield and you get this filthy little nugget of sludge, recorded live over a weekend. There are bum notes and feedback, a looseness to the affair that FDM just hold together on these punishing tracks that, it has to be said, worship at the temple of Eyehategod (dirge like blues pushed through heavy distortion and rage, for the unititated). If you don’t like slow and heavy music by social misfits, this won’t change your mind but it’s a great listen for fans of that sorta stuff.
Opener ‘The Song Formerly Known As…’ manages the capture the menace so many EHG acolytes fail to grasp, ‘FDM Grimnastics’ lives up to its name with a swinging, acrobatic groove before a mid section tar pit. ‘No Happy Chorus’ delivers on its titled promise, and though there’s little variation in proceedings, there are wonderful flourishes like the glorious bass runs at the end of ‘Ugly Broke Miserable’. If the song titles haven’t given it away yet, everything’s pretty grim in outlook but head nodding enough to dig through. The sound is obviously raw, as intended I’m sure, but captures the atmosphere of FDM, a band who I found outright intimidating when I saw them at Devil’s Kitchen a few years back. There’s an aggression in every song, a “fuck you, we’re pissed and playing loud fuckin’ music” and sometimes goddamn that hits the spot. Best served in the dark after inhaling…
