Prism is the fourth album from Katy Perry and doesn’t stray much from her previous formula of pop songs.
‘Roar’ is the standout track. It has a catchy melody, easy lyrics to sing along to and a chorus that bursts into standard Perry singing about being great. And roaring louder than a lion. ‘Roar’ rings a very familiar bell called ‘Firework’.
‘Birthday’ is typical Katy Perry – sweet-toned melody, a peppy dance beat and the kind of song you’d play at a house party. ‘Ghost’ is another number that’ll have your head bopping. It’s about seeing someone else on the ‘other side’ and is a perfect pop number. ‘It Takes Two’ also has a catchy melody.
But there seems to be a lot of filler songs on this album. ‘Walking on Air’ is an ’80s infused song full of ‘rapping’, repetitive lyrics and harmonies upon harmonies. But it just leaves you wondering what Perry was thinking when she recorded this song. Really Perry? Is this is the best you can do?
‘Walking on Air’ is followed up by ‘Unconditionally’, another typical Perry song about loving someone unconditionally. It has the epic Perry vocals and a grand chorus and melody that makes you feel like you can do anything. Meanwhile, ‘Love me’ is about self empowerment, but it falls flat. It’s a song you can imagine a tweenie listening to as they battle bad skin.
Prism is really disjointed and the songs don’t flow into each other. It jumps from peppy little pop pieces to hip-hop inspired songs like ‘Dark Horse’. Add some ’80s anthems and it leaves you a bit confused.
Don’t expect much from this album. Prism won’t change your life, but there are some good songs for when you need motivation at the gym or feel like dancing around in your room.
