A heavily anticipated second studio album from the dance trio RÜFÜS, Bloom is 11 bangers back to back.
Tyrone’s melancholy tone is a smooth juxtaposition to the upbeat synth and bouncing percussion. Mixing broody with bright, the alternative dance tracks hit cruising altitude somewhere between Coldplay and The Presets. A unique sound, unlike most in the electronica family, Bloom is just as easy to dream to than dance to.
‘Like an Animal’, ‘Say a Prayer For Me’ and ‘You Were Right’ have the catchy chorus you look for in a festival tune, while the 9 minute epic ballad that is ‘Innerbloom’ is mostly instrumental, almost meditative. ‘Until The Sun Needs To Rise’ has an almost xylophone-party vibe that sounds really magical against the eerie vocals.
The lyrics – paired with the psy-trance sound – draw a picture, much like the first album – nature, hot girl, heartache – “I’m cold in the river, Lips moving there’s no sound, Pulling me under, I’m under, You’ve given me nothing, Keep telling me I’ll be fine, Keeping me kissing, out guessing”. Not so simplistic as much as beautifully unclear, equivocal.
With the line hard to draw between electronica, dance, trance, pop and psy, Bloom is a little of everything. Melding genres seamlessly, the unique vibe is very relaxing, energising and just kind of makes you want to sunbake and sway.
