Like Britney Spears had a musical love child with The Rolling Stones…almost – Sky Ferreira’s much anticipated and highly controversial new album Night Time, My Time is riotous.
A good time, and a bad time, the lyrics spring out of the speaker and beg you to sing along. Despite a penchant for pop lyrics that has been evident throughout her career, Sky once tried to drop the mainstream style for something a little more street grunge. But, after a series of EP’s, twists, hit songs and turns, the result is the perfect collaboration of psychedelic punk rock with bouncing pop and electronic verses and highlights.
‘I Blame Myself’, the first song I discovered off the album, screams vulnerability. Beautifully highlighted by both her raw vocals and the honest lyrics, it’s one of the more stripped back tunes on the album: “Underneath it all, I know it’s not your fault, that you don’t understand, I blame myself”.
In a complicated juxtaposition, ‘Heavy Metal Heart’ is an angry, grungy mix of percussion and screechy electric guitar. Despite the change of tune, Sky’s lyrics tend to remain on point throughout: “You turn my red to black, I’m never coming back, the way I was before, I’m not her anymore” – her use of short, sharp lyrics with frequent use of rhyme making it almost impossible to restrain from singing along.
Whether it’s self-love or loathing or Sky’s love of others and things, the common theme is really just everyone’s tumultuous relationship with the world. Seemingly a generalisation, Sky captures her emotions about the small situations in life and bottles them up in her music for us to reflect and learn from.
