On the 25th of October 2013, the Sydney Entertainment Centre was taken over by Fall Out Boy and their gangs of fans. From black leather overcoats to short skirts and glasses, the crowd was a scattered mess of Fall Out Boy fanatics. After the uproar about the band’s separation, followed by an over 18’s gig in the aftermath of their reforming, this gig was the most anticipated for by the angsty teens that filled the venue.
Balaclava’s shielded the faces of the band members as they opened with ‘The Phoenix’. The masks matched the crime that is having a voice as angelic as front man Patrick Stump. The crowd really erupted when the band removed their masks and continued the show with ‘I Slept With Someone From Fall Out Boy And All I Got Was This Stupid Song Written About Me’. The show really kicked off when they played the classic ‘This Ain’t A Scene, It’s An Arms Race’ and the whole venue screamed out the lyrics.
Fall Out Boy surprised the crowd when they appeared at the back of the pit on a mini stage to do beautiful acoustic versions of ‘I’m Like A Lawyer With The Way I’m Always Trying To Get You Off (Me & You)’ and ‘Grand Theft Autumn/Where Is Your Boy’. The show concluded with ‘Saturday’ and the crowd was ushered out of the venue, still shaking in their boots with excitement.
The show was perfectly mixed, with every sound being heard with no overpowering elements. Fall Out Boy planned the set list to match every fans taste and included just the right amount of conversation so as not to bore or leave you unsatisfied. While bassist Pete Wentz did most of the talking and deep thinking, front man Stump had his fair share, while guitarist Joe Trohman and drummer Andy Hurley performed mind melting solo’s.
This show, along with their newest album release, is pure proof that Fall Out Boy have made a full comeback, maintaining their rock and roll demeanour and signature sound.
