The Toff in Town, Melbourne
Saturday July 13, 2013 :
In this modern era, it is crucial to support the up and coming artists, especially the Australian ones, not only for their benefit, but for us in general. By maintaining our presences at local gigs, we’re able to continue the high standard of music that Australian artists are able to produce.
Closure in Moscow was a one of a kind event with performances by a variety of Australian based artists, each with their own individualistic style of music that made it a very unique and special kind of night. The venue, The Toff in Town, was perfect the perfect location due to it’s smaller capacity allowing for a far more intimate performance.
Starting off with an acoustic solo performance was David McGuire. I had never heard of McGuire before, but I was truly blown away. Although the small crowd stood far from the stage, McGuire’s strong voice and acoustic style mesmerised the audience and we simply could not get enough. McGuire is definitely someone to watch out for in the future.
On Sierra were next to perform, and they definitely added to the excitement of the night with a purely instrumental performance. The alternative/post hardcore yet boppy style of music was easy to listen to and even though instrumental bands aren’t very common, they definitely won over the crowd with their unique sound.
Up next, performing to a crowded room, was Gatherer. At this point, the room was quite full and people were edging closer towards the stage. Gatherer really seemed to bring the crowd in with their catchy tunes and although I hadn’t heard of them before, I found myself bopping along to all their songs. A great band with a fresh sound, these guys will go far.
Finally, Closure in Moscow jumped on stage and the venue was well and truly packed out for their highly anticipated performance. If their musical talents alone weren’t enough to entertain you, then their lead singer, Christopher de Cinque, certainly would have with his intriguing Renaissance outfit and his (lack of) dancing abilities. I say this light heartedly as this all added to the performance, making me chuckle at the few times when I found myself drifting off into space. Some of their songs had more energy than others, and this was evident in the facial expressions and body language of some of the members. Having said that, the lead singer’s constant craziness made up for the lack of enthusiasm a few of the other members seemed to have.
Overall, it was a great night out, definitely one to remember!
