Taronga Zoo, Sydney
Saturday February 17, 2018 :
There’s something special about a performance delivered by a band who is as stoked to be there as the audience is and Cloud Control at Twilight at Taronga last Saturday night was exactly that. If you’ve never attended a gig at this totally unique and picturesque location, make it a priority. The wide sweeping hill of Taronga’s concert lawn leads down to the stage which is perfectly framed by Sydney’s skyline. Punters bring their own rugs and snacks and relax on the lawn, soaking up the sunset and good music.
Supporting Cloud Control at this once-of show was Triple J Unearthed’s Body Type alongside fellow Sydney-local Julia Jacklin. Unsurprisingly most of the crowd got there early to see the full lineup, filling up the lawn before the sun had even set.
A special show like this is made even more so when the acts themselves hail from Sydney. A smile crept onto Julia’s face as she explained that most of her family were in the audience including nephew Arlo, who was attending his first ever gig before even reaching the age of one.
Cloud Control’s energetic set was dotted with moments of humour between songs, with the band very candidly explaining the meaning and inspiration behind some of their well-known tracks. While their set only went for an hour, singer and guitarist Alister made it very clear that they’d play every song in their back catalogue at the zoo if they could. I think I can speak on behalf of the entire audience in saying that we’d definitely happy about that!
