Hornsby RSL, Sydney
Saturday May 21, 2016 :
I must say from the start I had no idea what I was getting myself into covering this event. Hardcore and pole dancing evokes visions of nightclubs, strippers and smoke filled rooms, this event could not be further from that vision. Met at our table by the organiser Danni the rules and participants were clearly explained.
The 29 participants involed in the event comprising of 28 women and one man were selected from over 80 appilcants. Each participant had one song to interact with the audience and demonstrate skills on two individual poles. The poles spin and static allowed the participant to demonstrate various moves whilst at the same time hold the attention of the capacity crowd.
The evening compare, the outrageous Chilli Rox provided the audience with ongoing entertainment and comentarty. The 5 judges lead by names including Liquid Lux and Miss Philly were in charge of judging these 29 hopefuls.
From the beginning the crowd got everything. From car wash attendants, to the tin man (woman). There were dancers on a lounge and even one with a sword and gun. The dress was sexy and edgy keeping in theme with the evening.
So where did the participants come from? They were medical students, a biologist, mothers and even a bank manager – every day people. What I did witness was the pure beauty of the event. These participants were strong, graceful and beautiful. Working a pole is much more than taking your clothes off, the core strength demonstrated by these people were on par with top end gymnasts.
Overall great skill and strength. An event well worth catching next time around.
