[Live Review] LONG ISLAND SOUND + POST PAINT + TWIN LAKES + I AM THE AGENT

Long Island Sound (10)

Cambridge Hotel, Newcastle
Friday March 1, 2013:

This outfit of local bands was a great way to escape the rainy Friday night with a beer or two, starting (late, may I add) with the grungy tunes of I Am The Agent, who have recently acquired a new drummer. Thankfully all four bands are easy to listen to and in the case of Post Paint and Long Island Sound rather pretty as well.

It was a quiet night at the Cambridge, but enough people to provide a good night at the pub with some local music. Twin Lakes are a relatively new act, with Seabellies’ bassist Eddie Garven as the lead vocalist and his brother Huw alongside him on the guitar. They have gained much hype in the past few months and this set did not disappoint with a heavy melodic list of songs that could be described as one part Silversun Pickups and one part Band of Horses.

Newcastle and Sydney based band Post Paint played a killer set, paying special attention to their song ‘Fox and Hound’ but unfortunately Alisa on violin was a little drowned out, taking the whimsical element out of their sound and making them sound heavier than on track.

The Long Island Sound setlist was full of all new material. It’s no less layered than their much loved EP and it got the crowd shuffling and shouting in what was a very intimate and cool experience.

The only recognisable track was toward the end: ‘Animal House’ is the song that won them Triple J Unearthed in 2010 and it did well to rile the audience up for ‘Kevin Spacey’ and ‘Pigeontoad’ – more unreleased tracks. Hopefully this means we can soon expect another release from the Newcastle math-pop band.
