Enmore Theatre, Sydney
Saturday December 2, 2017 :
Meg Mac’s “Low Blows” tour saw her turning 16 shows into 24 sold out shows, Mac came out smiling on the second night at the Enmore Theatre in a long black cape and signature black hat. Her look is distinctive.
The crowd is a mix of trendy triple j listeners and baby boomers that know a good tune when they hear it. Mac opens with ‘Turning’ before leading into ‘Grace Gold’, both off her debut album. I wondered how she would hold herself on stage but she is confident, sharing endearing anecdotes with the crowd about songs and touring.
Highlight tracks of the night is her popular cover of ‘Grandma’s Hands’ and ‘I Didn’t Wanna Get So Low But I Had To’. The young performer strides on stage, her voice sounding perfect. Honestly her vocals are so on point it makes me wish I could steal it, the same way Ursula did to Ariel in The Little Mermaid, I spend much of the night unsuccessfully trying to work out the logistics of this trade.
After the standard I’m going off stage for 30 seconds but I’ll be back on, Mac graces us with her Like a Version rendition on Tame Impala’s ‘Let It Happen’, which is beautiful and shows the complicated structure and layering of the track before ending with ‘Roll Up Your Sleeves’. Meg Mac is well on her way to being a national treasure.
