[Live Review] MS MR

MS-MR11

Metro Theatre, Sydney
Friday July 26, 2013 :

The Metro Theatre was completely sold out for the MS MR gig on Saturday night, packed with music lovers that were wishing they were going to Splendour, but like ourselves, were not able to, so catching the MS MR sideshow was the next best thing.

Support act Kite String Tangle (aka Danny Harley) from Brisbane warmed the crowd up with some dreamy, enchanting beats. Part lounge, dub and electronica with a sunny feel including a remix of Flume’s ‘Hyperparadise’ had the punters grooving before the main act.

Lizzy Plapinger and Max Hershenow (MS MR) with their second keyboardist/guitarist and drummer took to the stage to an eruption of cheers. It felt like a long wait between the two acts, and the crowd were certainly amped up for their performance. Immediately the duo from New York City dazzled the audience with hit single ‘Bones’, with Lizzy’s haunting voice, and the powerful harmonies sending a collective goosebump through the crowd.

The songstress danced her way through favourites such as ‘Think of You’ and ‘Fantasy’, leaving many admiring her fresh moves (and boy can she dance!), with her enthusiasm being reciprocated by the audience who happily clapped, sung and bopped along. MS MR were genuinely thrilled by the love from the crowd, and it was refreshing to see a band so engaged with such a large audience.

The sing along continued as MS MR covered a wide range of songs from their EP, Candy Bar Creep Show, and first studio album, Second Hand Rapture. The songs were delivered to perfection, with heavy jungle drum beats, funky keyboards and fresh vocals. Predictably MS MR finished on the crowd favourite ‘Hurricane’ to which the packed out Metro erupted into a frenzied sing along. It was over to soon, but as we left the theatre sweating with ‘Hurricane’ ringing in our ears, we were glad to have indulged in a little bit of the Splendour sideshow.
