Bimbadgen Estate, Hunter Valley
Saturday November 19, 2016 :

Of all the times that I have been out to the Hunter to catch a show, I am sure that this had to be the most chilled out bunch of people I’ve had the pleasure of sitting with. It was a warm day that threatened ever so slightly to drop some water on us, not that anyone would have minded.

9,500 people had come to Bimbadgen Estate, and though all were here to bathe in the vocal glory that is Rodriguez, the choice of supports was just about right. Throughout the afternoon, we were able to lie back on the grass and let the music fill the air.

Mid afternoon, Mark Wilkinson fills the speakers with his unique vocals, and the cheese and fruit platter is laid out. And I know we’re in wine country but there was no booze today, just juice. It’s a good lengthy set for Wilkinson, as for all artists today, a point much appreciated by all present. We’d all prefer to have some live music playing than some non-descript song while we are waiting for the next band.

Archie Roach continued the evening’s soundtrack eliciting much support from the crowd. Russell Morris’ Australian roots revival continues, and who doesn’t love to sing along to ‘The Real Thing’. Under lights, Xavier Rudd was quite enthralling. The crowd rose and danced to a beat that was unstoppable. What a great way to get us all ready for the main event.

The mystique of Rodriguez filled the venue as the man quietly makes his way onto stage, without trademark hat and glasses. He greats the roaring crowd with a wave, and is handed said hat and glasses. Once they in place, he steps forward and begins. Many in the crowd have grown up with these vocals, and it is enough to now hear them live. It was beautiful. The biggest responses came when ‘Sugar Man’ and ‘I Wonder’ began, the thousands went wild and sang along with gusto. ‘Street Boy’ was highly emotional, and covers of The Doors’ ‘Light My Fire’, Elton John’s ‘Your Song’ and Jefferson Airplane’s Somebody To Love’ were all surprising yet welcome additions to the set.

Not one person would have been disappointed with the day. Great music throughout the afternoon and a chance to see Rodriguez, the best weather and the most laid back crowd. Things are looking good for a wonderful Summer of music in the Hunter.
