Enmore Theatre, Sydney
Sunday September 16, 2018 :
Local girls Bodytpe gathered a pretty decent crowd as openers on a Sunday night. I saw them play a little over a year ago and they have made strides both in their song writing and performing, they ooze cool ’70s vibes and lead vocalist and guitarist Sophie McComish seems to be force to be reckoned with.
Unknown Mortal Orchestra came out to a sold out crowd with lead Ruban Nielson wearing the world longest hoodie, and almost immediately took to the people. He ran up the stairs of the Enmore Theatre and playing to the crowd from the front of the balcony. The punters lapped it up.
Obviously the older favourite ‘So Good At Being in Trouble’ has everyone grooving, as well as a crowd full of awkward indie adults on a Sunday night can, and another older tune ‘Necessary Evil’ went down a treat. Unlike most of us in the crowd, Ruben cut some fine shapes on the stage, some of his moves clearly inspired by some of Prince’s finest.
The debut track of their latest album Sex and Food, ‘American Guilt’ showcases some of their more heavier inspirations the, the band sometimes fall between this hybrid of Electronic Dance music and’ 80s metal, but don’t get me wrong, I am here for it.
Their arguably biggest track ‘Multi Love’ set up the crowd for the prescribed encore chanting, before the band came out, finishing with three more songs including my personal favourite song that has been stuck in my head for about a month ‘Hunnybee’.
My biggest worry when going to see a band like Unknown Mortal Orchestra is whether the largely electronic tracks will translate live and I can confirm, the band is killer live. I hope you didn’t miss it.
