Sydney Opera House
Saturday February 25, 2017 :
It’s been a while since I spent an evening at the Sydney Opera House, and it took Warpaint, and my drive to hear tracks off their latest release, Heads Up, live, to get me back. On entering the Concert Hall, it appears that I’m not the only one to feel strongly towards this band – the damn place is absolutely full.
Beginning the night with ‘Keep It Healthy’, the band spent the next 90 minutes filling the hallowed Concert Hall with their trance-inducing dreamscapes. The set was a fine cross section through the band’s 13 year career, focusing on their latest Heads Up release – the title track arrived early, and the raucous ‘New Song’ was a perfect closer to the main set.
The lighting worked an absolute treat with the music that Warpaint deliver, and with the ornate venue that the Opera House is. Beautiful all round. As was spending the night with the birthday girl, Aussie drummer Stella Mozgawa.
Delving back to the 2007 Exquisite Corpse EP with ‘Krimson’, ‘Beetles’ and ‘Elephants’ brought an approving sigh from the crowd. The non-album cut, ‘No Way Out’ saw an appearance, and the night closed with a double shot off The Fool with ‘Baby’ and ‘Bees’.
Personally I loved the show. Warpaint’s hypnotic alt-rock sat easily within the Opera House walls, and I walked out pleased to have made the trip down from the Central Coast.
