The journey to Blue Rev was marked by unexpected twists and creative leaps, but the five-year wait since their last album, Antisocialites, was well worth it. The power and magic of Blue Rev stems from Alvvays’ ability to bridge ostensible binaries and fuse elements that seem antithetical in single songs—cynicism and empathy, anger and play, clatter and melody, the soft and the steely. The album’s 14 tracks explore the harmonically rich and lyrically provocative territory that Alvvays have become known for.
The band’s unorthodox recording process for Blue Rev brought their sound to new heights, producing a record that is simultaneously immediate and intricate. Collaborating with fellow Canadian Shawn Everett (The Killers, The War On Drugs and Kacey Musgraves), Alvvays were encouraged to embrace spontaneity by recording the album straight to tape before spending an obsessive amount of time filling in the cracks, roughing up the surfaces and mixing the results.
Blue Rev marks Alvvays’ growth into one of their generation’s most complete and riveting rock bands. Do not miss your chance to see them live this Summer.
