Following the release of Daryl James’ first single release ‘The Wolf is at the Door’ late last year, the gritty rock/blues/raw acoustic roots musician is back with a second single ‘Moth to the Flame’ in the lead up to his sophomore album Insofar.
Daryl James describes ‘Moth to the Flame’ about – “being hooked on doing things that we know are bad for us in the long run, but continuing to do them anyway, returning again and again, like a moth to a flame. What is the real cost of buying into all the distractions of modern life?”
On top of his already eclectic and innovative guitar playing, foot drums, loops and soulful lyrics the Brisbane based musician has incorporated some new sounds for ‘Moth to the Flame’. Daryl’s focus was to build a narrative that allowed natural sounds to mix seamlessly with electronic components developing a modern progression to his acoustic roots. Of the lyrics, Daryl says – “’Moth to the Flame”’ is not a preachy song, I am sucked in too, it͛s an observation and an acknowledgement of the modern situation.”
The recording of ‘Moth to the Flame’ was a fully immersive experience for Daryl James, recording and performing it himself at home. He pushed a lot of personal boundaries with the track both musically and lyrically. He offers haunting, smooth and husky vocals through a passionate performance that evokes everything from introverted retrospection to wild untamed dance. With a beautiful blend of intricate finger picking, and body percussion, ‘Moth to the Flame’ truly delivers.
Originally hailing from Snowdonia along the North Wales coastline, Daryl James has been playing guitar since he can remember. After touring UK and Europe, he set off on a solo adventure and ended up busking on the streets of Brisbane, crowdfunding an East Coast tour, and packing out shows and festivals across Australia. Daryl continues following the success of his first single, and will be kicking off on another a tour with a string of east coast shows in March.
