‘Indie roots’, ‘global blues’, ‘jam band’, ‘Indigenous alternative’? Call them what you will, but First Nations band, Digging Roots are marching to the beat of their own drum. After winning a JUNO Award and taking home a Cobalt prize at the Maple Blues Awards last year for their composition ‘Hwy 17’, they return with a new tour and brand new single ‘AK47’.
The six-piece band from Toronto, Canada seem to have found the right balance of fairytale good fortune, old fashioned hard work and the creative chemistry to make a go of it. The husband and wife team, Raven Kanatakta and ShoShona Kish firmly inhabit roots and blues, but with a nomadic wanderlust to explore other sonic terrain. Digging Roots brings some pow-wow to Australia with their musical stories of travellers, troublemakers, lovers and heroes. They also carry with them a whimsical thread of idealism – that love can keep the darkness at bay.
