In a huge result for the Sunshine State, Future and Young Thug, two hugely influential giants of American hip-hop, announce that they’ll be making up for lost time by teaming up and heading to Brisbane for a massive outdoor show at Riverstage on Sunday February 25th 2018.
These prolific MC’s will individually draw from an extensive collection of hits and mix-tapes, showcase their infamous mastery of Auto-tune and then tag team to roll out cuts from their recent collaboration SUPER SLIMEY – a release which is still ringing in the ears of the hip-hop world.
Born and raised in Atlanta and coming up through the Dungeon Family collective, Future has been riding a wave of popularity that first swelled when he started whipping out mix-tapes at superhuman speeds in 2010.
His first major label release Astronaut Status came in 2012 and showcased a bourgeoning mastery of the studio as well as a now legendary work ethic. He has since gone on to work Kanye West, Drake, Rihanna and Taylor Swift, among countless others. His last four studio albums have all gone to Number 1 in the US, making him one of the biggest rappers of his generation.
Young Thug also built himself up from Atlanta streets, something he acknowledged in the title of his first mixtape series I Came From Nothing. If these tracks put him on the map, it was his unique flow and take-no-prisoners technique that sent him to the top. Also praised for his ability to work at breakneck speed, he has featured on cuts by just about everyone in hip-hop today. Most recently, he can be found on ‘Havana’, the worldwide mega-hit by Cuban-American singer Camila Cabello.
Legends in their own right, Future and Young Thug existed in each others orbit for years before they got together to break the game wide open. Coming up only 20 minutes from each other in Atlanta, they were both taken under the wing of rap pioneer Gucci Mane and have since they’ve featured on several of the same releases.
After a brief Twitter beef was cleared up a couple of years ago, the way was paved for these heavyweights to finally come together. The result was SUPER SLIMEY – a fire mixtape full of all the hallmarks expected from a pair of rappers at the peak of their powers that charted internationally and even went to Number 1 on the US hip-hop charts.
Both waylaid on their way to Brisbane earlier this year, the arrival of Future and Young Thug on Australian shores will prove to be one of the most anticipated shows of the summer.
Special guest on this double-bill is none other than Australia’s favourite rapper Tkay Maidza. After a huge 2016 with the release of her self-titled debut album, including tracks ‘Switch Lanes’ and ‘Carry On’ (which also featured Killer Mike), she is ready to take back to the stage on what will be a power-house night for hip-hop in Brisbane.
Also joining the party is South-West Sydney’s buzzing MC B Wise, who first burst on to the scene with the infectious Prince Akeem in 2015 and has since gone on to release crowd favourites ‘Lately’ and ’40 Days’, as well as support some of the biggest names in the hip hop game including Schoolboy Q, Vince Staples and G-Eazy.
