Melbourne electro rockers, Halcyon Drive make a spectacular return today with intricate new single, ‘The Birds’ and a stack of East Coast dates to follow.
Layering dark electronic elements with sophisticated instrumentation and sharp production, the first taste of the trio’s debut album encapsulates their refined musical direction of the past four years. With quirky electronic toy sounds almost mimicking that of real bird sounds, ‘The Birds’ flutters around the period of trepidation that comes with a new romance. In vocalist Michael Oechsle’s own words, it’s “where two people have to learn about each other, their routines, their ways of living life.”
Discovering new ways of recording and songwriting for this next phase of their musical journey, Halcyon Drive migrated towards a brand new producer, laying down their new material with legendary Perth studio guru Joel Quartermain (Meg Mac, Dustin Tebbutt, ELKI). The result? A musically diverse topography contoured with bittersweet melodies and earnest observations on the human experience. The trio have effortlessly melded elements of rock, pop, electronic and metal into their most extensive body of work to date.
For the live show band members Max Pamieta (drums, percussion) and Michael Oechsle (vox/guitar) add a secret weapon; multi-instrumentalist Basil Yu to help bring these exciting new electronic elements to life. Never ones to shy from the stage, Halcyon Drive cut their teeth early with three headline tours. They then went onto share bills with the likes of MEW and played festivals like NYE on the Hill, BIGSOUND and Caloundra Music Festival. The live trio take flight across eight dates up and down the East Coast in September and October in what’s set to be an exciting return to the stage and a chance to soak up a small taste of the unique sonic sphere that is their upcoming debut LP.
