We all know we have amazing musical talent right here in Newcastle, so why aren’t our artists being celebrated the way that they should? Homebase Newcastle (a collective of music-minded friends, spearheaded by DJ/Producer Dylan Weir) was born from a disillusionment with the same old gig venues and samey lineups that stick with specific genres. They have became dissatisfied with seeing acts who should be getting hyped and celebrated, playing for free or being ignored as background noise.
Homebase Newcastle have set out to establish a fresh attitude by putting on a recurring music event that is out of the ordinary. They’re putting acts together on the bill who are wildly different. There will be something for everyone and surprises in store. They’re bringing the festival vibe indoors and curating a satisfying lineup of artists who will bring audiences of different ages and tastes together. Homebase Newcastle are a group of friends that want to put on unforgettable parties celebrating Newcastle’s creative power. Their first event, Legionnaire, aims to celebrate what the Newcastle music scene should be about; a community of people, with diverse backgrounds, ages and musical tastes, getting together regularly to support local artists, to party and to expect the unexpected.
The Gallipoli Legion Club’s classic upstairs auditorium is the perfect venue to house the team’s vision, with its central location, spacious room and kitschy vibes – it’s an untapped resource as a space for live music.
The first Legionnaire event is happening this December. Amy Vee headlines a solid bill with her ghostly, bewitching folk. This will be Amy’s final gig of 2016 and a chance to experience her stellar new single ‘10 years’. No-Fi Records alumni Voodoo Youth bring their energetically loose, reverb-soaked garage rock to close the night & Latin rhythm-heads Sambafrog will get hips moving when they bring their wild and vibrant percussion to the stage. Makin Wood & The Deputy C will be lending some acoustic guitar & sax jams in their debut performance after years of making music together. DJ Creepy Dylan will be spinning some fun ’90s house to get the party started.
Music and shenanigans start at 4pm and continue late into the evening. It’s a celebration of local talent and what summer in Newcastle is all about; Music, fun, friends.
