Sydney’s cinematic instrumental band, We Lost The Sea is announcing a slew of dates for their first-ever headlined Australian tour. Performing across Australia for the past 8 years, supporting the likes of This Will Destroy You (US), Rosetta (US), Mono (JPN) and The Red Paintings, We Lost The Sea have elevated their live shows to new heights, so it is only fair to give the people what they want.
Honed in the once thrumming confines of Sydney’s live music venues, We Lost The Sea came together in 2007, to create a new collection of noise that gathers relentless crushing guitars together with post-rock atmospherics and melody.
Their debut release Crimea and 2012’s acclaimed sophomore album The Quietest Place on Earth established We Lost The Sea as a force to be reckoned with; making end of year lists both locally and internationally while also being given the title of “best Australian performance of the year” by Lochlan Watt of Triple J’s The Racket in 2013.
We Lost At Sea’s most recent and third full length album, Departure Songs, released in 2015 was written during a time of rare and uneasy rest, devoid of the constant adrenaline of performing live and the heartbreaking loss of their lead singer and best friend, Chris Torpy. The band decided not to replace their fallen brother, however to continue on in his name and the outcome; the bands first wholly instrumental release. This time offered a new space for We Lost The Sea to reflect on all their previous experiences and cradle them, while cultivating a new album in an unfamiliar environment – the most experimental and emotional, by far. Inspired by failed, yet epic journeys and events, each track in Departure Songs has it’s own story and is a soundtrack to that story. The group’s sense of rediscovery as a creative whole is tangible throughout.
We Lost The Sea teach us that you don’t have to be afraid of the past to move bravely into the future and with this, the band will take Departure Songs on the road, performing the work in full for what will be their first-ever headlined Australian tour and topping it all off with an extra special hometown party at the Oxford Art Factory.
Departure Songs is out now via Bird’s Robe Records and Art As Catharsis Records in Australia and Translation Loss Records in the US.
