Five-piece Sydney rock outfit Mac The Knife are carving their own jagged path through the Aussie scene, and their latest single, ‘Less Than Familiar’, is a blistering testament to their raw energy and emotional depth and confronts the swirling anxieties and exhilarating uncertainties of navigating your early twenties.
“Things change in your early twenties,” says MTK frontman Bryn Chapman Parish. “Groups divide, couples break up, doors fling open and slam shut, friends you thought would be there for life move on. This period is one of extreme highs and crushing lows. You return home to a town you love, and everything feels just the same… except it’s not.”
In ‘Less Than Familiar’, Chapman Parish captures the feeling of upheaval with searing lyricism: “You’re the echo of a voice I used to know, you’re the echo of a life I used to know, I can’t recognise this life bleeding out before my eyes, fate has come, yet we go on. Where did we go wrong?” Amplified by these lyrics, guitars shatter, drums thunder, and vocals soar, mirroring the emotional maelstrom of this tumultuous time.
‘Less Than Familiar’ is an anthem for everyone grappling with the transformative years of their early twenties. It’s a raw, unflinching look at the anxieties and excitement that come with forging your own path, of vulnerability and strength that resonates with anyone who has ever felt both lost and hopeful.
‘Less Than Familiar’ is the latest single of the band’s upcoming EP In The Shadow Of It All to be released on Thursday 4th April 2024. The EP will feature previously released tracks ‘Curb My Bite’, ‘Labour In Vain’, ‘Blood of My Blood’ as well as three new tracks, ‘Flee’, ‘Blood of My Blood’ Remix by Barley Passable and ‘Less Than Familiar’ Remix by LLUX.
