Spring – a time when kings go off to war, of voters going mad at the polls, and for garage bands to head out across the motherland to see what friends, fans, and strangers alike think of their latest. With that in mind, Royal Chant are sending out ‘New Nowhere’ to the wide world and hitting the stages of Australia with their typical mix of fuzz, melody, apathy, and optimism.
‘New Nowhere’ is the first single from the band’s upcoming Small Town Bruises EP (the band’s 4th EP among a hefty trove of releases), and with the culture shock of moving to Australia slowly wearing off, singer/writer/guitarist Mark Spence has turned his gaze away from the interior state of affairs to cast his eyes around his surroundings, with lyrics of rural reflection and isolation now making their way across the page. Let’s not allow this haphazard metaphor get too carried away, because in the end it sounds new yet strangely familiar. The drums have a bash while the guitars do their usual gallivanting as Mark’s voice goes where it is wont to go. An acoustic guitar makes an appearance. That’s a first.
With the new line-up firmly in place and spirits high after a smashing start to 2013, Royal Chant continue to carve their strange path amongst the gutters, garages, and stages of Australia, out of the spotlight but never far from it, keeping their heads down and the distortion up.
