Melbourne pop-rock outfit Self Talk today release an understated Studio Ghibli-esque video for ‘Untitled’, the new single from their June debut EP Seeing What I Want To See. The scrappy five-piece have also announced a co-headline tour with Paper Thin, kicking off this Friday 2 December.
Brooding and raw, ‘Untitled’ denotes an ending and acceptance of pain. Fortifying guitars and punchy percussion build the track to its denouement, from a quiet realisation to an ominous hurricane of memories. Animator Joel Williams set this emotional whirlwind against the seeming mundanity of walking home alone – a time when the truths you’ve been hiding from can sneak up on you. The clip quite literally rolls the credits on the story it tells, wistful and nostalgic – but ultimately letting go.
2016 has been a banner year for Self Talk, whose singles ‘Hypocrite’ and ‘Clean Washing’ received triple j airplay. The self-described “musical family” have cut their teeth supporting the likes of Ceres, Luca Brasi, The Hard Aches, The Sinking Teeth and Verge Collection, cultivating a live presence that is infectious and undeniable. This run of dates will be the last chance to see Self Talk before they emerge with new material in 2017.
