Perth’s South Summit have today released the beautifully shot music video for their recent single ‘Catacombs’; the lastest taste from the band’s forthcoming debut album The Bliss, out November 8th.
The video was shot partially in a home previously owned by Australian Pianist David Helfgott (who was famously portrayed by Geoffrey Rush in the Academy Award winning film Shine (1996)). The band happen to be friends with the current owner, and say they “were extremely lucky to be able to shoot there” – with the grandiose rooms pairing perfectly with the huge sound found on ‘Catacombs’.
The band worked alongside videographer Tavian Ord (Dice, Paige Valentine)and creative director Cedric Tang (Siobhan Cotchin, Lo), who have both been by the band’s side for all the albums videos so far. The band have been blown away by the high-quality shoots, stating that “shooting with Tav was crazy exciting when we got to see on the display screen how all the set design, lighting and camera work made such a good looking video before it had even been edited“.
The video was partially shot at the Amaze Miniature Park in Mandurah, 1 hour south of Perth. The maze scenes perfectly encapsulate the themes of the single – demonstrating the webs of trauma and mental walls we tend to build up mentally over time.
“The main themes are coming of age and how we deal with certain aspects of pain. ‘Catacombs’ is a track that helped me delve deep within myself so I hope others can too. The inspiration behind catacombs comes from certain experiences from my life, and ‘catacombs’ represent that to me. The catacombs are a dark place beneath a somewhat beautiful place. I feel that everyone has their own catacombs hidden within them. So, I wanted to tell a story about what my catacombs look like..” ZAYA REUBEN, SOUTH SUMMIT
Produced by Dave Parkin (Spacey Jane) at Perth’s Blackbird Sound Studio with mastering from Brian Lucey (Post Malone, The Black Keys), ‘Catacombs’ is the third single from the album, after ‘Givin’ It Up’ and ‘Ottoway’ released earlier this year. The three singles give a great glimpse into the expansive, slick sound found on The Bliss – an album that shows off new stylistic directions for the band, whilst still staying true to the sound South Summit fans have come to love over the years.
Twelve tracks that knit together an elevated songwriting style and a newfound confidence in the band’s vision moving forward, The Bliss sees South Summit unafraid to explore a kaleidoscope of emotions against a fusion of rock, reggae and hip-hop inspired soundscapes. For longtime fans, The Bliss is the perfect graduation moment of South Summit’s musicianship. For newcomers, The Bliss is the perfect gateway to an engaging body of work.
“The Bliss is a fresh new sound to our fans. We mixed up happy and sad vibes, and everything in between. We had a blast experimenting with new sounds and pushing the limits of our production and live performance in the studio. We like to call this vibe a mixture of everything we’re excited about right now, while keeping a hint of our classic South Summit feel.”
