Some 2 years in the making and recorded across New York, London and Sydney with key collaborator and producer Alex Burnett (Anthony & Cleopatra, Sparkadia), Better In Blak showcases Thelma Plum at her best; brutally honest, with her heart on her sleeve and emotions ranging from laugh-out-loud self-effacing jibes to brutal and sometimes bleak self-reflection, it’s an inside look at the Gamilaraay musician’s life.
The album is a shot in the arm for Australian music, with synth bops (‘Woke Blokes’), pop steppers (‘Not Angry Anymore’) and some beautifully minimal moments (the one-take voice and guitar gut-wrencher ‘Do You Ever Get So Sad You Can’t Breathe’). Plum moves effortlessly between the anthemic (‘Don’t Let A Good Girl Down’) and the slightly lighter (‘Nick Cave’) and the Hottest 100 #79 and ARIA Gold ‘Clumsy Love’), it’s a wide sonic palette that just works and will solidify Plum as one of the country’s brightest song writing talents.
